Lone Star Park Poised to Finish 2012 Thoroughbred Season Strong

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Wednesday, June 27, 2012)As Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie approaches the end of its 2012 Spring Thoroughbred Season, there will be no shortage of excitement. The final nine days of   live racing are action-packed with four stakes races, three concerts and one of the top fireworks shows in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

           Tuesday, July 3 will feature Pat Green in concert. Gates open at 3:00 p.m. with an early first race post time of 5:00 p.m. The concert will begin following the last live race at approximately 9:30 p.m. Concert is free with general admission before 7:00 p.m. or $20 thereafter. Lone Star Park's age policy for concerts is 18 and older with a valid I.D. unless accompanied by a legal guardian

The 16th annual Lone Stars & Stripes Fireworks Celebration is Wednesday, July 4. Following the last race, Lone Star Park, in conjunction with the city of Grand Prairie, will host a spectacular 20-minute firework display choreographed to music. Members of any branch of the military receive free general admission with a valid military I.D. Gates open at 3:00 p.m. with first race post time scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Fans can also enter to win a Trip Giveaway for (2) to Nashville, Tennessee courtesy of Time-Warner Cable. As part of the holiday celebration, all customers will receive a contest entry form at the admission gates for an opportunity to win the trip giveaway. There will be live music between races featuring Incognito from 5:00-11:30 p.m. on the Courtyard of Champions stage The Family Fun Park will be open with bounce houses, pony rides, a petting zoo and more for all the youngsters.    

            After taking Thursday, July 5 off from the regular racing schedule, live racing will resume on Friday, July 6 followed by the Josh Abbott Band concert. The show will begin after the last live race at approximately 10:30 p.m. Free with paid admission before 9:00 p.m. $20 thereafter. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. First race 6:35 p.m. Listen to live music by Big Mouth on the Courtyard of Champions stage between races.             The last Saturday of the season, July 7 is “Stars of Texas Day” featuring four stakes races including the divisional Texas Stallion Stakes, the Valor Farm Stakes and the Assault Stakes. A total of 10 live races are carded. Gates open at 11:30 a.m., first race post time 1:35 p.m.  It is also Fan Appreciation Day. Enter to win great prizes including cash, iPods, gift cards and more. For the youngsters, the Family Fun Park will be open from noon until 4:00 p.m. with bounce houses, pony riders, petting zoo and more. Enjoy live music on the Courtyard of Champions stage by the Vic Duncan Band from 1 p.m.-6:30 p.m. And in concert for the final show of the 2012 Lone Star Music Series is Billy Currington. The concert will begin after the last live race. Mike McKinney will open the show followed by Billy Currington live on the main stage. Admission is $5 before 5:00 p.m. and $20 thereafter.             Closing Day is Sunday, July 8. Don’t miss out as the live racing action at Lone Star Park wraps for the season. Remember racing fans, although today is the end of the live meet, the Bar & Book will remain open seven days a week, year-round for simulcast racing at tracks all around the country, including Del Mar, which begins July 18.

Additional Activities: On Tuesday, June 26 the Fourth Annual Charity Softball Double-Header “Rumble at the Park” was held at Mike Lewis Park in Grand Prairie. The games featured the Lone Star Park jockey colony against Lone Star Park employees. Lone Star Park employees won Game 1 with a final score of 8-5, while game 2 was won by the Lone Star jockey colony with a final of 9-5, earning the split decision. Lone Star Park contributed a $500 donation to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF). Thank you to everyone that participated.

Additional notes: It’s a close race for the training title. As of Sunday, June 24, just one win separates the top three. Danny Pish is in front with 35 wins. In second place is Bret Calhoun with 34 wins and Karl Broberg has 33 wins so far. Leading rider by a 16-win margin is Lone Star Park’s all-time leading jockey, Cliff Berry.

It looks like Cliff is a cinch for the title again. And End Zone Athletics, Inc. is in front for the owner title with 15 wins, six wins ahead of all-time leading owner at Lone Star, Tom Durant, who has eight wins through Sunday.


Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie, a Class I racetrack operated by Global Gaming Solutions LLC, offers a 53-day 2012 Spring Thoroughbred Season which opens Thursday, April 12 and concludes on Sunday, July 8.  Live racing will be held four days a week, Thursday and Friday at 6:35 p.m. (except Thursday, May 31 and Thursday, July 5 when there will be no live racing), and Saturday and Sunday at 1:35 p.m.  The racing program on Memorial Day, May 28, will start at 1:35 p.m.  Special twilight programs will be held at 5 p.m. on both Tuesday, July 3 (with post-race concert by award-winning country artist Pat Green) and Wednesday, July 4 (with the Lone Stars & Stripes Fireworks Celebration). The track’s 26-day, 2012 Fall Meeting of Champions for American Quarter Horses will be held from Sept. 14 to Nov. 10.
