2012 Winner, The Field Cricket Is Back To Try Again, Faces Formidable Competition
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Thursday, October 24, 2013) – Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie features the 16th running of the $25,000-guaranteed, B. F. Phillips, Jr. Stakes, (RG3) for accredited Texas-Breds, three-year-olds and upward, going 400 yards on Saturday, October 26.
Returning and seeking back-to-back victories is last year’s winner, The Field Cricket. To accomplish that, he will need to up his game due to some serious competition, especially from Prospect to the Top.
Owned by Joel Tavarez, Prospect to the Top is by far the most accomplished of the field. Since finishing sixth in last year’s Grade 1 Refrigerator Handicap, this five-year-old stallion by Coronas Prospect, has won everything he has entered including a pair of Grade 1 Championship stakes last December, one at Zia Park and the other at Sunland Park. His most recent wins were the All American Gold Cup at Ruidoso on September 1 (he also won the All American Gold Cup there in 2012) and the Grade 2, James Isaac Hobbs Stakes at Zia on September 14. He has amassed earnings of $951,150 from his career record of 24-12-5-2. He is trained by Brandon Muniz and will be ridden by Cody Jensen.
Another contender of note is Sue Fikes’s Loves Brown Sugar. Trained by Kie Mushinski, this four-year-old mare by Prime Talent finished sixth in her last which was here in the Refrigerator Handicap on September 28. Before that, she was on a streak of five wins straight, including the Selma Stakes in June at Retama Park. In July, she won the King William Handicap and the TQHA Classic Stakes, also at Retama.
Sure Shot B has won exactly half of his 12 career starts, earning $540,984 in the process. Apparently, he loves the track at Lone Star Park. His record here is 4-3-0-0. He won the Texas Classic Juvenile Stakes on closing day last year and won an allowance here on October 3. The four-year-old gelding by Stoli is owned by the partnership of Charles Forbes, Jr. and Tommy Hays, III and is trained by Bobby Martinez.
The field from the rail out, with jockey and morning line odds listed in parentheses, consists of: Nash Jolla (Rodrigo Sigala Vallejo, 12-1); Prospect to the Top (Cody Jensen, 6-5); Sure Shot B (Ricky Ramirez, 3-1); The Field Cricket (Jerry Lee Yoakum, 20-1); Rebels Prospect (Luis L. Vivanco, 20-1); Fiery Cartel (Bobby Lee Dow, 12-1); Loves Brown Sugar (Cesar Zuniga, 5-1); Ja Jess Perfect (Francisco Calderon, 20-1); Bz Amazing Grace (Roy Baldillez, 30-1) and Jess a Comment (Luis Ramirez, 10-1).
The $25,000-guaranteed B.F. Phillips, Jr. Stakes (RG3) is race nine on the 10-race program with a scheduled post time of 9:47 p.m.
Additional Notes: Heading into week seven of the 2013 Fall Meeting of Champions for Quarter Horses, Ricky Ramirez leads all riders with 16 wins, and Trey Wood leads all trainers also with 16 victories.
