Jody Pops Zoomer Claims Title Tonight in Grade 1 Texas Classic Derby
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Saturday, November 9, 2013)– In one of the most impressive performances at the meet, longshot Kates Dynasty dominated the field winning the $1 Million Grade 1, Texas Classic Futurity tonight at Lone Star Park over a fast track. Final time for the 400 yards was 19.404, speed index was 99. Margin of victory was 1 ¾ lengths under jockey L. Salvador Martinez.
Owned by the partnership of Smith, Windham and Guthrie and trained by Michael Joiner, Kates Dynasty, by Fdd Dynasty, became the second filly ever in its 21 year history to win the Texas Classic Futurity. The first and only other filly to win was just last year when Valiant Lil Lady won the 20th running of the race.
This was the fourth win from six lifetime starts for Kates Dynasty. It also was her first stakes and first graded stakes win. Her career earnings of $9,090 jumped to $454,090 with the winner’s share of the million dollar purse.
At off odds of 8.70-1, Kates Dynasty returned $19.40, $7.00 and $4.40. Second place went to Houdini returning $9.20, $5.40. In third place was Skuze Pleeze who returned $3.00 for show. Hes Relentless, Coronado Cartel, Won to Watch, Mister Big, Big Biz Perry and Cr Tuckernuck completed the order of finish. Especially Tres was scratched.
JODY POPS ZOOMER WINS TEXAS CLASSIC DERBY - VALIDATES PERFORMANCE FROM TRIALS
Three weeks ago were the trials for the tonight’s Texas Classic Derby. In the final trial of that night, Gary and Randal Kurz’s Jody Pops Zoomer broke the 440 yard track record of 21.080 set by Dashing Perfection back in 1997, clocking it in 21.075. Tonight he validated his ability when he broke very alertly on the outside, turned on the speed advancing to hold on well to a half-length victory over Jetblack Gold Moment to win the 21st running of the $394,306 Grade 1, Texas Classic Derby.
Trained by Toby Keeton and ridden by Luis L. Vivanco, the gelding by Zoomin for Bux paid $7.80, $5.40, $3.00. Jetblack Gold Moment returned $7.20 and $4.00. Captain Strawfly paid $2.40 to show. Dashin Brown Streak, Rc Tres Times Seis, Rockin Disco, Specialscountrychick, Dash Master Jess and One Handsome Man completed the order of finish. Lota Pyc was scratched at the gate.
With the win, Jody Pops Zoomer improved his record to 11-5-1-1 and increased his earnings to $220,292.
END OF MEETING AWARDS
Bobby D. Cox claimed his first owner’s title with five wins. Trainer Judd Kearl won his third training title with 20 wins. Jockey Rodrigo Vallejo won his first riding title at Lone Star Park with 22 wins for the season. Congratulations to all of them!
Simulcast racing continues in the Bar & Book 363 days a year. Live racing at Lone Star Park will resume with the 2014 Spring Thoroughbred Season, which begins on Thursday, April 10, 2014.
